[Law Schools: All] [Graduation Year: All]

Although NYU doesn't rank students, I ended the year with a 3.68 GPA, which means I'm in the top few percent (I'm guessing top 2-3%, since there are only around 10 students out of a class of about 450 with a 3.7 or above). One of my professors emailed to tell me I wrote the best exam in her class this spring. How did Law Preview help? Substantively, I don't think it helped that much, just because each class is really what the professor designs it to be, not some core of legal knowledge. However, I do think it was extremely helpful psychologically -- I took law school seriously from the get-go, didn't get behind with reading/ outlining, and had the motivation and stamina (and luck) to do very well, receiving three A's (out of six grades) in my first year. I'm guessing Law Preview is a self-selected group; that is, people who are gung-ho enough to take a class the summer before law school are the same people who are really driven to study hard and do well. I do think that the exam-taking strategies class was extremely helpful -- this is how I approached law school exams and I ended up doing very well. The research/ writing class was probably not quite as helpful, since this is something that takes practice and experience, but it was certainly instructive as an overview. Overall, I wouldn't ascribe my success solely to Law Preview, but I do think it helped calm me down and get me off on the right foot from the very beginning of the year; and it definitely helped when it came to exams. Now that the first year is over, I'm waiting to hear about journals in a few weeks (fingers crossed), and as a result of my GPA, I will have my pick of firms.

[Law Preview] helped me understand that you need to hit the ground running. it is important to put serious time in and start outlining as soon as possible. While I didnt necessarily follow the advice to a tee, I was happy with how I did and apprecaited getting into the 1st year law school mentality as soon as possible. It really is crazy how much first year matters!!

—Anonymous, New York University School of Law, Class of 2008

I think it made me feel more prepared and comfortable about coming to a top-five law school from a no-name undergraduate school. And I think it was actually quite helpful to have an overall road map of each first year course sort of in the back of your mind. But to tell you the truth, I think what people get out of it most is all the anecdotes and the advice about law firms, journals, groups, exams, etc that just make you feel less confused and more geared up and prepared for the coming year.

—Anonymous, New York University School of Law, Class of 2009

Good overview of course topics, however Law Preview most importantly provided a great intro. to the homework and readings that you will face. It was friendly introduction to the Socratic method, and a great confidence boost going into the semester.

—Jascha C., New York University School of Law, Class of 2012

Law Preview really helped me prepare for my first year of law school. Going into NYU Law, I was a bit nervous; I had heard about how daunting the first year of law school could be and had no idea what I was getting myself into. Law Preview really exposed me to what to expect during my first year and how best to schedule my time, organize myself, and maintain a calm composure that really helped me not only succeed in my first year of law school but enjoy my time. I think that is perhaps the most important part -- beyond succeeding in school -- is learning how best to enjoy it. Having been introduced to and somewhat familiar with the first year curriculum and having experienced the amazing faculty that the Law Preview program offers, I really got to enjoy my first year in ways that my peers did not.

—Alex, New York University School of Law, Class of 2012

Law Preview prepared me for the challenges I faced the very first day of law school. While other students were clambering to find balance in their personal and professional lives, I had already prepared a schedule for myself to study. While students were struggling to learn the skills of case briefing, I had already had the experience of doing so. I quickly gained the reputation in class as the student "in the know", and I give Law Preview much of that credit. My experience with Law Preview was invaluable in both preparing me for law school and molding my expectations of what I was ready to face. I finished my first semester with a high GPA and class ranking, the confidence to continue on a successful path, and the respect of my professors and fellow students. You only get one chance at law school, one chance to excel in your first year, one chance to set the bar as high as you can. Law Preview is a tool that any smart student should use to gain that competitive advantage!

—Donald T., North Carolina Central University School of Law, Class of 2010

Law Preview helped me adjust my expectations of law school. Before the first class, I was far better prepared than other students. While my classmates were adjusting to new schedules and strategies, I was already committed to a study schedule, I knew how to effectively brief a case, and I was already introduced to each of my first year subjects. Other students were convinced that I had attended law school previously! Law Preview undoubtedly contributed to my success in my first year. I finished in the top ten of my class, and I clerked for a Court of Appeals judge this summer. I am so convinced of the effectiveness of Law Preview, I'm taking a week off work this summer to act as a student assistant for Law Preview. Thanks, Don, for your commitment to helping law students become better students, and better lawyers!

—Donald T., North Carolina Central University School of Law, Class of 2010

The Law Preview course definitely gave me an edge in my first semester classes. I went in to each class having a general idea of what to expect and how to consider the material presented. The amount of information thrown at us could get so overwhelming at times, but with my notes from Law Preview I was able to focus on what was most relevant. The exam taking tips were very helpful as well. They helped me organize my exam preparation materials and manage my time while taking the exams. My school provides written evaluations rather than grades but I got the equivalent of A- in three of my four classes. In the fourth, I got the equivalent of an A. Based on my performance, I have already been hired by a judge for the summer!

—Anonymous, Northeastern University School of Law, Class of 2009

I am writing to thank you for the wonderful experience your Law Preview course offers. . . . I have been away from a formal curriculum for 25 years while practicing surgery and your introduction to the first year of law school was exactly what I needed. As I look at my classmates, I see mid-semester panic starting to set in. Thanks to you, I am not in that situation. . . . I'll always recommend you very highly and thank you again.

—Dr. David P., Northern Illinois University College of Law, Class of 2003

I loved it! [Law Preview] made me feel much more confident in class and studying!

—Katherine M., Notre Dame Law School, Class of 2011

Law Preview played a large part in my success during my first year. The program benefited me in several ways. It provided an accurate experience of what law school classes are like. For me, this was extremely helpful. My background is in science and I had been out of school for seven years before going back to law school. I was also unsure about how good of a fit law school would be for me, so Law Preview was a way for me try it out before quitting my job and taking on student loan debt. Law school is a stressful experience, and any way you can find to reduce that stress gives you an advantage. Some people in my class were overwhelmed and felt lost after the first week of school because they didn't know how to read or brief cases. The reading assignments and case briefs I did for Law Preview helped me hit the ground running when school started and gave me an advantage over a lot of my classmates. Most importantly, it gave me confidence that law school was a good fit for me, which helped me fully commit to it. One of the keys to success in law school is finding a work schedule that allows you to complete your assigned readings and start preparing early for finals. The most beneficial part of Law Preview for me was that it provided a proven schedule for managing the heavy workload. I would have been lost without this schedule. It helped me stay on track throughout the semester and gave me an idea of when I needed to start my outlines for each class. Some people in my class waited until November or later to start their outlines. You can't do that in law school. There is just too much information to process. Closely following the schedule Law Preview provided gave me significantly more time to prepare for finals than many of my classmates. This advantage was crucial in helping me excel in my classes. The post-program support provided by Law Preview also helped me to stay on track. Throughout the first semester, Don sent emails reminding alumni where we should be in terms of preparation and provided tips for succeeding on law school exams. Again, law school is all about finding ways to gain an advantage and these tips definitely helped. The thing that impressed me most, though, was that Don made himself available to alumni by email or phone after the program ended. During the first semester, I emailed Don about 6 weeks before finals starting to make sure I wasn't too far behind on my preparation. He suggested we schedule a time to talk on the phone and we ended up speaking for 20 minutes about where I was and what I needed to do. He also convinced me to use the Law-in-a-Flash flashcards to prepare for my exams. I was concerned about the cost, but he assured me they were worthwhile. He was right. They were great and helped me excel at spotting issues on my exams. This type of individual feedback and support that Don provided is simply not available in law school. Having access to it gave me a definite advantage in preparing for finals. . . . Law school is expensive and you might be concerned about adding to that cost by signing up for Law Preview. I completely understand and had the same concerns. Ultimately, I chose to look at Law Preview as an investment, and it has really paid off for me. My law school doesn't post individual class rankings, but I finished significantly above the class average first semester and did even better second semester. I owe a lot of my success to the preparation and support I received from Law Preview. For most people, attending law school is a $100k-180k investment. You wouldn't invest that much money in the stock market without doing research and preparation to increase your odds of success. Law Preview is a proven way to increase your of odds of achieving a significant return on your investment in law school by earning high grades during your crucial 1L year. Given the current legal job market, you need to give yourself every advantage you can.

—Anonymous, Notre Dame Law School, Class of 2011

Great overview of the subject matter covered. Also instilled in me an internal clock/checklist so that I had a sense of where I needed to be--in terms of final exam preparation-- during the course of the semester.

—Anonymous, Notre Dame Law School, Class of 2012

I attended the NY session last year and wanted to give you an update.. . . Once regular classes ended, I was unsure how to switch over to exam mode so I called you for advice. You calmed my nerves and got me back on the right track. I am happy to tell you I graded on to Law Review. Additionally, I received the highest grade on my legal writing brief, which earned me a spot on Moot Court. . . . Thanks again for all your help.

—Richard D., Nova Southeastern University—Shepard Broad Law Center, Class of 2004

3.5 -- Including two As!!! That was my GPA after completing my first semester of law school. Thanks to Law Preview I was able to accomplish what I wanted when I began school; I am at the top of my class and have been invited to join the Law Review. After taking your course, I was relaxed and confident when I entered law school, and I had a clear direction on how to attack my first semester. Most students fail to realize that once they enter law school EVERYONE is on equal ground, regardless of their background. . . . Law Preview provided me with an excellent foundation for law school and I highly recommend the program to anyone who has high aspirations of succeeding in law school . . . Thank you guys for helping me achieve my goals.

—Christine R., Nova Southeastern University—Shepard Broad Law Center, Class of 2003

[Law Preview] instilled importance of briefing cases, not just book briefing, to make sure I really understood the case; how critical it is to stay on top of the work and studying and not to leave it all until the reading period [rank #11 out of 259].

—Anonymous, Nova Southeastern University—Shepard Broad Law Center, Class of 2009

As a single parent of two preschoolers, I knew that going to law school 10 years later than my classmates would present a number of opportunitites and pose a number of challenges, mainly the fact that I hadn't been in "study mode" for quite some time and was out of practice with the academic routine. I went to Law Preview to get myself back in the academic mindset. Law Preview mainly scared the hell out of me with the advice to study 12 hours per day, every day, if I wanted to be at the top of my class. While I thought this figure was overkill (11 hours was plenty for me), I am grateful for the advice because it underscored how competitive law school is and how much material there is to absorb and master in a short period of time. The good study habits begun in Law Preview served me well: I graded onto Law Review, made Moot Court, and earned the highest grade award in three classes.

—Laura C., Nova Southeastern University—Shepard Broad Law Center, Class of 2009

As a single mother of a preschool child and returning student, Law Preview enabled me to determine what the essential skills needed to get through law school were. My goal, unlike many colleagues, was not to make the top 10%, although Law Preview provided me with those skills. I made the choice to put in the work necessary to keep me going through school with an average GPA, while making time for what was just as important--raising a precocious 5 year old. I learned to prioritize my time, 'clear the deck' before school began, and was given an edge in learning how to brief cases. I am now a rising 2L with a judicial internship and 2 additional second year courses already under my belt based on summer school. I would not have been as prepared to get through law school without Law Preview, and I recommend the course to any nontraditional (if there is such a thing) law student.

—Deborah S., Nova Southeastern University—Shepard Broad Law Center, Class of 2010

I do not think I will ever be able to know how much Law Preview has helped me. It was by far the best investment I could have ever asked for. I would recommend it to anyone that is going to law school. I continue to step back and think, wow, I wonder where I would be without that class. It was just very eye opening and helpful in my first semester. I enjoyed the non-scary professors as a mini-icebreaker to the class. I also found all the tips very helpful. I may not remember all the terms that we discussed or went over, but I am familiar with the topics and this helps tremendously to get my arms around each class. Thanks again

—Lauren H., Nova Southeastern University—Shepard Broad Law Center, Class of 2011

I feel that Law Preview set me apart from the rest of the class because I knew what to expect before I even started school. Many of the cases we read and briefed for class I had already an understanding of because we had gone over them in Law Preview. It also helped me with time management and balancing all the work that is expected during first year. I felt more comfortable starting law school because I knew what I was about to encounter. I am in the top 1% of first year class and I strongly believe it was due in part to the skills I learned through Law Preview [ranked #3 out of 317 after first semester]. I would high recommend law preview to anyone entering law school.

—Anonymous, Nova Southeastern University—Shepard Broad Law Center, Class of 2011

I graded on! I attended the Chicago session last summer. I was awfully apprehensive about starting law school at age 52, competing with kids who hadn't started becoming senile yet. The course gave both the skills I needed and the confidence to hit the ground running. I've actually enjoyed my first year at Ohio Northern, and the invitation to join Law Review was such a thrill. Thanks for your help.
